Solar Heat for Low-Income Families

RREAL's Solar Assistance program offers solar air heating systems to families who qualify for fuel assistance in high heat need areas. These systems are provided at no cost to the recipient.

States like Minnesota spend millions of dollars annually on Energy Assistance, a program which assists families who cannot pay their winter heating bills. While Energy Assistance is a critical program, it does not provide a long-term solution to the persistent problem of fuel poverty.

Solar Assistance systems can contribute from 10 to 30 percent of the families’ heating load, thereby reducing or eliminating the need for government fuel assistance… for decades.

Although our primary geographic location for Solar Assistance continues to be the northern half of Minnesota, we have begun working some in Wisconsin and South Dakota as well. We envision Solar Assistance expanding to serve areas of high heat need nation wide, and are actively working to that end by expanding our own service area, and encouraging other organizations to provide Solar Assistance programs in their communities.
